In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff goes back in time with former Orlando Pirates defender Edward "Magents" Motale.
Motale, who started his football career at Jomo Cosmos, reveals how much he first earned at the club.
A humorous character by nature, he had a successful football career, winning the 1994 league title, the African Champions Cup the following year, and the biggest of them all, the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

Who you signed for?
"I received my first pay cheque in football at Jomo Cosmos. That was in 1989, if I remember correctly.
"Those days, Jomo Cosmos had players like Jomo Sono himself, Pitso Mosimane and Webster Lichaba.
"I was recruited from Arcadia Shepherds."
How much was it?
"It was R500. It was a lot those days, it was too much."
How did I celebrate?
"To be honest, I didn't celebrate. Those days, I was still at High School, so I saved it for my school needs.
"So, I didn't celebrate, I just saved it for my studies. It helped me a lot with my school stuff going forward."
What did I buy with it?
"Just a school uniform, I bought myself a school uniform. I was still at High School, so I was young. I was, like, 17 or 18 years old."
Did it last you the whole month?
"It did last me the whole month. Remember, those days things were a bit cheap.

"For the club's training sessions, I'd travel with the team's bus. As someone who was still at school, I was still staying at home.
"A bus would come to collect me, so I didn't have to spend on transport. I don't have any regrets when it comes to the salary. I was happy, it was enough for me.
"I had no girlfriend back then, so the money was only for me and myself."
