Luvuyo Memela confident of Orlando Pirates success in 2018/19

Pirates ended an impressive season in second place last term, improving vastly from their 2016/17 season in which they ended a disastrous 12th – their lowest position since the inception of the Premier Soccer League in 1996.

The likes of Musa Nyatama, Justin Shonga, Thembinkosi Lorch, Innocent Maela and Memela himself came to the fore under the new technical team lead by Milutin Sredojevic, showing glimpses of their potential as they played key roles in the team’s showing.

The 30-year-old midfielder now believes tangible success is on the horizon, if they can just improve on certain areas that they made note of towards the end of last season, when they won eight of their final 10 Absa Premiership games.

“There’s a lot that we still have to improve, and obviously we must win trophies which is what we all want to do,” said Memela.

“If it was up to me, I would want the team to win all the trophies because we’ve got quality, we just have to work hard, listen to the coaches and do our homework.

“We get homework to analyse teams, as players – looking at how we’re going to penetrate them and how they’re going to try and penetrate us, and also how we’re going to solve it.

“So, if we work together as we did especially towards the end of the [2017/18] season, I think we’re going to get something.”

The Buccaneers’ opening assignment of the 2018/19 campaign is at home to topflight returnees Highland Park on Saturday (20h15), while their first cup outing will see them face SuperSport United in the MTN8.
