Legendary Clive Barker "delighted" for nephew Steve's success at Stellenbosch

The underrated 53-year-old Steve and his Stellenbosch FC side have made a dream start to their 2021/22 DStv Premiership campaign and currently occupy second position in the standings with 16 points after eight matches played, just three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Stellenbosch even more impressively is one of only two sides alongside Sundowns who are undefeated so far this season.

Steve's proud uncle, Clive has now shared that the Barker family are extremely proud of his achievements.

"He's a good honest coach and he gets the work done and doesn't play around so I'm delighted for his success.

"He's been around for a long time, we're all just happy for him and that he's got the ability to coach and continues to grow the name of the people who he represents. So I'm delighted about that."

Clive Barker also insisted that Steve deserves all the plaudits before tipping him for even more future successes.

"He is his own man he gets it out there we take no credit for it," Clive Barker added.

"We're just happy for his success that's all. He doesn't phone us for advice, he gives us advice!

"The results are consistent and he comes from a background of working with a lot of lesser type clubs, and he's been very, very successful. He does it all by himself, we support what's done, and it's his work, nobody else's.

"He's a tough little guy and he's had a hard time but the results have shown that he is a top man. I think eventually things will fall into line and he will get the recognition, while I think people like him for his honesty.

"He never complains he just gets on with the game and we are 100% right behind him.

"I think if he was given one of the bigger clubs he would be a huge success. But he will be around for a long time to coach."

Stellenbosch next visits Kaizer Chiefs in a league encounter at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 2 November 2021.
