Kaizer Chiefs leading Soweto Derby stats

The weekend clash will be the 158th meeting between the sides since their first in 1970, with Chiefs holding a comfortable lead in the head-to-head stats.

Amakhosi have won 67 matches to Pirates’ 37, with 48 of those matches drawn. A further five games have been abandoned for various reasons.

Chiefs are also well ahead in the scoring stakes with 207 goals to Pirates’ 165.

The last 12 competitive meetings between the sides have yielded just three victories for Pirates – in the League in the 2011/12 season, in the MTN8 semi-finals in 2013, and in the 3-1 Absa Premiership victory in November.

Chiefs have won three of the last 12 games, with the other six games drawn. There have been just 20 goals scored in those 12 matches, well below the League average of around 2.5 goals per game.

That 3-2 League win for Pirates three-and-a-half years ago was also the last time the ‘home’ team won this fixture, with the last 10 games either providing wins for the 'away' side or draws.

Although recent clashes have seen just a smattering of goals, this was not always the case, especially in the 1970s.

On two occasions there have been 10 goals scored in a Soweto Derby, including the very first in January 1970 when Pirates triumphed 6-4.

Chiefs got revenge five years later when they claimed a thumping 7-3 success.
