Itumeleng Khune next after Happy Jele?

The Buccaneers announced on Monday that Jele is set to leave the club after turning down a non-playing role as previously reported by this website.

The 35-year-old is now set to continue his playing career with Royal AM a likely destination with negotiations already underway.

The defender arrived at Pirates from Walters Stars during in 2006 and went on to make his debut on September 20 of the same year against Maritzburg United in what was the first league match of the season.

Jele weathered the storm at Pirates in waiting for his big break after playing just four matches in his first season.

Before going on to enjoy the double treble era, suffering a career-threatening injury, memorably filling in as an emergency goalkeeper, wearing the captain's armband, playing in both CAF club competitions finals, and setting a new record for the most appearances made at the club.

Despite his long-standing service, the club decided against renewing his contract despite making 33 appearances last season.

The option of a further year on his contract was not exercised.

Sitting on the edge as well is Khune.

The veteran goalkeeper made his first team debut on August 25, 2007, and just like Jele has known no other club throughout his professional career.

Khune is into the last 12 months of his contract and worsening his situation is the fact that he only played once last season.

From being guaranteed his place between the posts through most of the years since making his debut, Khune has fallen into becoming a peripheral figure with Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma ahead in the pecking order.

The 35-year-old recently attended a FIFA goalkeeper coaching course, though he failed to attend all allocated days due to personal commitments, indicating his possible future plans.

Khune has not featured in the last 10 Soweto derbies against Orlando Pirates and with the club trimming down their budget odds are against him staying on as a player beyond the end of this season.

The former Bafana Bafana remains one of the top earners at Chiefs and there have already been proposals that he takes a goalkeeper coaching role when he stops playing.

With his playing contract unlikely to be renewed at the end of this season, Khune will have to make the decision on whether he moves on to play elsewhere or accepts a salary cut for a non-playing role within the club.
