'Mphela really gave me a tough time'

In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff speaks with former Santos FC and Bloemfontein Celtic goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng.

Motsoeneng advises current players and coaches not to become too attached to football clubs, as they are often known for their disloyalty.

Who is your all-time favourite player?

"John Tlale. Just like Simon Gopane, he came from humble beginnings and thrived when there was little in football. While top players were earning about R3000 a month, he made his way up from the Free State to join Bafana Bafana.

"He played a lot in Johannesburg for teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Looking back, John Tlale is the person who inspired me to become a professional goalkeeper."

Was Tlale your idol?

"Yes, I think we have some similarities in terms of short-stopping, although I was more inspired by Brian Baloyi."

Which striker gave you sleepless nights?

"Katlego Mphela is the one who really gave me a tough time. Every time he scored against me, he would remind me, 'I told you I was gonna kill you.'"

Your favourite PSL club?

"Before I turned professional, I used to be a Kaizer Chiefs fan."

Your favourite player in South Africa?

"The Orlando Pirates centre-back, Thabiso Sesane. I like the way he remains so composed inside the box."

Is there anything you dislike about the game?

"I learned that you shouldn't have an umbilical cord with clubs; you must understand that you are there to work. Render your services to the club, and then move on. I have seen coaches come and go, with players giving their all but still being moved on.

"We all thought Itumeleng Khune would always be a big part of Kaizer Chiefs, but that's not the case anymore."
