In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff catches up with former Mamelodi Sundowns winger, Joel 'Fire' Masilela.
The retired star from Mamelodi discusses the influence of Kaizer Chiefs legend Nelson 'Teenage' Dladla on his football career.
Growing up, who was your idol?
"Teenage Dladla. He was special. The way he carried himself on and off the pitch made it clear he was a kasi boy. Before Teenage Dladla came into the limelight, KwaThema was just another kasi where people rode horses and donkeys to sell coal and other goods. He put them on the map."
Which club did you grow up supporting, and why?
"I grew up supporting Orlando Pirates. My uncle from Atteridgeville was an Orlando Pirates fan but switched to Kaizer Chiefs because of my love for Teenage Dladla. I was privileged to work with him at Sundowns."
How did you break into top-flight football?
"Two guys from Mamelodi, Bra Ike, and the late Bra Tony, played a vital role in that."
Who was your best friend in football?
"The late Joas Magolego."
What do you dislike about football?
"Cheating. You can't cheat in football. We shouldn't have a president ruling football for 30 years, we can't have a Robert Mugabe in our football."
Who is your favourite player in South Africa right now?
"None."
If you could join any club in South Africa at the moment, which club would it be?
"Mamelodi Sundowns. At Sundowns, the policy is simple—Patrice Motsepe always mentions that football goes hand in hand with education."
What is the highlight of your career?
"I have reached where I always wanted to be. Even though I couldn't go to Europe, I'm proud of what I've done and achieved."
