In this week's edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff interviews former Mamelodi Sundowns player Bennett Mnguni.
Mnguni takes pride in having completed his football career without suffering any injuries.
Growing up, who was your idol?
"My late dad and Zinedine Zidane. The Frenchman made football look easy by playing it simply and gracefully."
Was he the player you modeled your game on?
"Yes. I wanted to play simple football just like him. But remember, I started out as a striker before switching to midfield when I joined Sundowns."
Which PSL club did you support?
"I supported Mamelodi Sundowns. I've been a fan since their days as Mamelodi United."
Who is your best friend in football?
"I used to hang out with players like Eric Ramasike, Mambush, John Tlale, and Roger Feutmba. I enjoyed spending time with the experienced players."
What do you dislike about football?
"Club owners no longer respect the players, simply because they are paying them salaries. But what can we do? The one who pays will always have the final say."
Who is your favorite player in South Africa at the moment?
"Right now, I have three favourites; Themba Zwane, Lucas Ribeiro, and the young Mofokeng at Pirates."
If you could join any club in South Africa as a player, which club would it be?
"I would choose Mamelodi Sundowns. I would love to go back there. I'm enamoured with their style of play."
Have you ever cheated in football?
"No. I have never cheated in the game, and I have never faked an injury. In fact, I finished my football career without getting injured."
If you could live anywhere in the world, which country would you choose?
"Spain. They are playing the same type of football as us."
