Where Are They Now - Hans Vonk

In our latest feature of Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Hans Vonk.

The former Ajax Amsterdam, Hereenven, and Ajax Cape Town shot-stopper reveals what he has been up to since retiring in 2011.

Who am I?

"Hans Vonk, I started playing football as a goalkeeper when I was 18 and ended it when I was 41 in Cape Town."

My playing days?

"Ja wherever I played it was always fun, it was always nice, whether it was in Holland or South Africa, and in Africa where we played a lot. It was tough but it was always up to you what you made of it.

"I've won a few cups at Heerenven, Ajax Amsterdam, and Ajax Cape Town, but I think the main achievement was to survive in playing football for 23 years playing goalkeeper.

"My highlights were the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, the Africa Cup of Nations, and the Uefa Champions League."

Did I make money from football?

"Yes, I did. It gave me the opportunity to do things that I always wanted to do. Not only for me but also for my family. I was blessed."

Where I'm living

"I'm living in Woodstock in Cape Town at the moment, where I bought a beautiful property with my girlfriend."

Job since playing the game?

"I retired in 2011, and studied management. Went to Heerenven where I worked as a team manager, Ajax Cape Town Academy manager, and Ajax Cape Town sporting director.

My current job

"I have started my own travel company, it's been operating since last year, where we focus on the Dutch market, it's only Dutch clients.

"We trying to bring as many people over to South Africa to enjoy the beautiful things of this beautiful country.

"People wanna see wildlife, wanna see safaris, they wanna play golf, they wanna drink wine and go to the beach.

"So I'm focusing on that as I always did in my career, to combine South Africa and Holland."

If I could do it again?

"I was too focused on my football, I've been into many places, so I'd live the moment more than to always focus on football."
