DStv Premiership match report Stellenbosch v Royal AM 13 August 2022

Royal AM suffered their first defeat of the DStv Premiership season after going down 3-1 to Stellenbosch FC on Saturday afternoon.

After a man of the match performance on Wednesday, Oswin Andries was given his second start by Stellies, whereas Royal AM started their two-goal hero against Chippa United – Andre De Jong

Following a telling display off the bench in midweek against Orlando Pirates, winger Ashley Van Wyk opened the deadlock on two minutes from a ball by Junior Mendieta.

Van Wyk was in the thick of things again a few minutes later when he looked to play Mervin Boij through on goal, but Royal AM goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto stopped the threat.

The visitors showed a change three minutes to halftime with Thato Lingwati taken off the field of play and Philani Cele introduced in his place.

Stellenbosch responded with an introduction of their own soon after the break, as Devon Titus came on for Boij in the hope of taking full control of the contest.

The Maroons then doubled their advantage albeit in fortuitous circumstances when Ricardo Nascimento steered a smart free-kick from Fawaaz Basadien into his own net two minutes after halftime.

Royal AM began to find confidence a little later following the disjointed spell and carved out a succession of chances that brought Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens to work.

Steve Barker's men grabbed a third midway in the second half after Andries picked off a ball from Mendieta and finished with aplomb.

The Maroons were comfortable during the latter exchanges, as AM pulled one back through De Jong from an assist by Nascimento.

Although, Thwihli Thwahla didn't manage to turn the tie around but watched the Maroons walk away comprehensive victors.
