The 31-year-old, whose contract was up at the end of the current campaign, has not been his marauding best this campaign, with the Blues struggling in 14th on the Premier League standings, yet interim boss Guus Hiddink has shown faith in the Serbian international, who has now signed a new deal keeping him at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2016/17 season.
And the defender was understandably delighted.
"I am very happy to stay with Chelsea for another season,” he told his club’s official website. “After eight years here this is my home and there is no other place I would rather play football.
"I have enjoyed so much success since moving to the club and I am determined to help the team achieve more in the last months of this season and next year as well."
Ivanovic has made 341 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 32 times as he helped his side win the Champions League, the Premier League twice, three FA Cups, the Europa League and the League Cup in the past eight years.
