Cape Town City coach Jan Olde Riekerink happy to promote youngsters

Cape Town City head coach Jan Olde Riekerink is happy about the youngsters who came through to help beat Chippa United on Friday.

Riekerink took advantage of the rule that allows teams to register free agents by promoting seven players to their training camp ahead of their first Absa Premiership fixture of the restart.

Olwethu Nyembe, Eyona Ndondo, Zaakir Allie, Taahir Goedeman, Jared van der Berg, Zuko Mdunyelwa and new 19-year-old signing Diego Appollis from Chippa United were all promoted to City's senior team squad.

Ndondo made his debut in the 1-0 victory over the Chilli Boys at Orlando Stadium after replacing Mduduzi Mdantsane in the 84th minute.

"I'm really happy we had to add a few youngsters, they are catching up with the level and we are united," Riekerink told the media.

The Citizens coach hopes they have done enough preparation to be competitive for their remaining matches as they aim to secure the club's safety.

"At this moment I think we did maximum on what was possible within the rules of the South African government to keep players fit," he said.

"Even though we had long training from home, we tried to keep the five training sessions with Zoom and other electronic help.

"The next phase was to come together and I think as a club we did extremely well to protect and take care of everybody, and at least make everybody feel their lives and families were protected."

Kermit Erasmus' winning goal against Chippa took his side up to ninth place on the Absa Premiership log, seven points above the drop zone.
