Bernard Parker inches closer to Siphiwe Tshabalala's Kaizer Chiefs appearance record

Parker cast a frustrated figure on Sunday afternoon as Kaizer Chiefs succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Royal AM, but he had some reason to celebrate after inching closer towards the club's PSL appearance record.

The 35-year-old former Bafana Bafana star featured in his 272nd league appearance, per the club's records, climbing ahead of teammate Khune to second place on Chiefs' PSL-era appearance charts in the process.

Since the 1996-17 season, only incumbent record holder Siphiwe Tshabalala has played more times in the league for the club than Parker and only 20 appearances now separate the famous Amakhosi duo.

With only 15 DStv Premiership matches remaining on Chiefs' calendar for the campaign, Parker will be unable to take hold of the record this season but could well claim the honour if he extends his stay at Naturena into next season.

Should he do so, it would be the second record that the former FC Twente star has claimed from Tshabalala in recent times, after previously overtaking him as the club's all-time leading goalscorer in the PSL era earlier in the year.
