Nurkovic looked to cap his return to the Amakhosi line-up with a goal after nodding Reeve Frosler's ball from the left towards the far corner, but Ricardo Goss' one-handed palm rescued the hosts.
Bernard Parker could've put Chiefs ahead with a first-time finish in the area following the half-hour mark, but he decided against pulling the trigger before Daniel Akpeyi palmed Hlanti's surging cross at the other end.
Wits also had a chance to go in front minutes later through Terrence Dzvukamanja, but Akpeyi smothered whilst Frosler had a penalty appeal turned away following a foul by Thulani Hlatshwayo.
Akpeyi was sadly not able to see out the rest of the half after a nasty collision had the Nigerian shot-stopper stretchered off for Bruce Bvuma in stoppage time.
Chiefs looked for a strong start to the second half, but a low shot from Phathutshedzo Nange nearly put the Amakhosi on the back-foot however Bvuma got down to gather.
Wits looked to change the complexity of the match after 58 minutes and introduced Rowan Human, who replaced Mathebula in the middle of the park while Ernst Middendorp threw on Willard Katsande for Baccus.
Chiefs had the ball in the net two minutes later after Nurkovic tapped in at the near post from an unmark position following Anthony Akumu's low ball, but he was flagged for offside.
The Serbian striker should've put Chiefs ahead in the final minutes from a low ball out wide, but the Serbian went horribly over.
The miss was punished by the Clever Boys when Eva Nga ran onto a through ball after beating the offside for a composed finish in time added on, derailing the Amakhosi's title hopes in the process.
