Zwane: Where Pirates lost it in CAFCL

One of the Orlando Pirates heroes to win the CAF Champions League, legend Eugene Zwane, has reacted to the club coming 'so near yet so far' to add second star under former coach Jose Riveiro.

After Pirates reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League this past season, it appeared as if it was in their hands to reach the final, a big opportunity to get the second star on top of the badge.

Especially after the Soweto giants were drawn against Pyramids, who, on paper, looked like a favourable opposition, given their lack of experience at that level and also having a very little fan base, compared to their rivals in Egypt.

The Ghosts could not score but also did not concede in the semi-final first-leg but they were in a rampant mood in the second-leg, after twice taking the lead and getting away goals but ultimately lost 3-2 to the Egyptian side, who went on to beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the final over two legs.

Zwane believes Pirates lost it all on tactics, rather than anything else in their away game against Pyramids in Cairo.

"It was so close hey, so near yet to so far. I mean Pirates should have wrapped it up against Pyramids. You need to be tactically disciplined, if you're going to score two goals away in Egypt," Zwane reflected, speaking exclusively to KickOff.com.

"You don't need to care about playing pretty football after that, you defend with your life, you secure your lead, you win the game, you're in the final, it goes into the history books. That's what everybody will remember.

"I think tactically, there were some flaws in that game, where they twice took the lead and twice gave up the lead. But they kept of pressing, playing good football and on that day, that's not the approach they should have taken," Zwane stressed.
