Bump up for Pirates keeper's earnings

Orlando Pirates have taken notice of the contribution made by Sipho Chaine this season by bumping up his earnings within his contract at the club.

Chaine has been a top performer at Pirates this season with his clean sheet count at 21.

His efforts provided part of the reason they went all the way to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Besides being the only ever-present goalkeeper in the competition with 14 appearances, he had nine clean sheets, pushing him to stand ahead of Mohamed El Shenawy of Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams and Ahmed El Shenawy from Pyramids FC.

In the Betway Premiership, his 11 clean sheets in 23 games have put him in contention for the Goalkeeper of the Season award with Williams and Elvis Chipezeze as competition.

Chaine is now the established first choice at the Soweto giants as proven by his numbers since arriving from Chippa United in September 2022.

This season, the former Bloemfontein Celtic keeper has played 45 games, conceded 34 and kept 21 clean sheets, while also achieving his first clean sheet in the Soweto Derby at the fourth attempt.

His clean sheets have been an improvement from six throughout his first campaign at the club, which he then doubled in his second.

With so much put in, Pirates have taken notice and rewarded Chaine with a bump up on his earnings.

He has a five-year deal at the club – signed as a three-year contract with an option of two years, which has long since been exercised.

Within that contract, Bucs have improved the terms from what he had agreed to upon arriving at the club before the subsequent growth that he has had in his career.

The 28-year-old has broken into the Bafana Bafana squad through his time at Pirates, where he has won five trophies.
