Ouaddou: Where Pirates need to improve to win the league

Orlando Pirates new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed where the Soweto giants need to improve to win what has proved to be an elusive league title over the last couple of seasons.

Jose Riveiro came so near, yet so far in chasing perennial champions Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title in his third season, in the process breaking club records.

However, after two-thirds of the campaign was played, it was becoming clearer that The Brazilians were still a cut above the rest and that the men in Black and White, try as they might, would ultimately up come short.

Ouaddou, who has been a week into pre-season, has suggested where his men need to improve to win the league, as he explained his game model.

"I like the philosophy of a positional game, possession, the wish to go to score. You can see (Pirates) scored a lot of goals and every year they come close to the leader," Ouaddou said in an interview on Pirates TV.

"But in the same way, we need to improve some areas, where if we manage to improve that area, I think we can go forward, to win the league.

"And when I speak about these areas, it's defensive transitions maybe, try to work on that, try to work together as a unit. It's a good team, we have to keep the legacy, keep the work that's been done.

"Usually when a coach comes into a club, he wants to destroy everything. We have to be clever, to analyse what's good, build on this foundation that's done by the previous coach and the previous coaches as well," explained the Moroccan-Frenchman.

South African clubs have had an Achilles heel with defensive transitions, with Sundowns themselves taught a harsh lesson in that regard by Borussia Dortmund at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Pirates were also picked apart in the second leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final against Pyramids FC on transitions, where they took the lead twice but ultimately lost 3-2 and bowed out of the tournament.
