My Muti Story: How muti let us down against Pirates

In this edition of My Muti Story, former Safpu deputy secretary-general Calvin Motloung reveals a humourous story involving muti rituals.

These days the CAF A license holder has gone back to his first love, which is coaching.

"Muti was a big thing at Tembisa Classic, we had people who knew all the ins and outs of muti at that club," Motloung tells KickOff.

"At Classic, we once had a guy called Malembe, that is if I still remember his name very well.

"He was a muti man from that side of Mpumalanga province.

"One day that guy took us to Nelspruit. I don't remember very well whom we were playing against but I suspect it was Orlando Pirates.

"Early in the wee hours, we were told to take off our clothes and jump this muti we couldn't understand what it was.

"We would be steamed in that veld, every time a person entered that 'steaming room' you had to say the opposition player's name.

"If you were a defender like me you had to call out a striker's name 'Lesly Manyathela won't go past me!'

"If you were a striker you had to call out a defender's name. A midfielder had to call Bennedict Vilakazi and say 'Angeke alunge la kimina!'

"As club captain, I'm the one who went in first, I said 'Denis Lota will never go past me, kugcina mina lana!'.

"After that, you would hear gunshots, pha!pha!pha! We were told we were going to win 3-0.

"The day of the match came, it was the Rothmans Cup at FNB Stadium, Bennedict Vilakazi wiped the floor with us that day.

"There at the back I struggled that day, I couldn't stop Denis Lota, every time he attacked he went past me.

"All of this was happening while Malembe was sitting at the grandstand watching. It was us who lost 3-0 instead."
