Steve Komphela concedes Kaizer Chiefs defeat despite best efforts

Amakhosi continued their abysmal run of just one win in their last 15 competitive matches – stretching back to February – as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City in their MTN 8 quarter-final.

Komphela, though, says he cannot fault his players for their efforts as they created numerous chances at goal but were unlucky not to convert.

"We tried battling it out; we tried our best to try and get a winand we couldn't," Komphela told SuperSport after the match.

"All we needed was just an equaliser then things would have changed, and I think we knocked quite enough to get a goa but unfortunately we didn't.

"There was quite a number of them [chances] where you thought it was coming, it was coming, but it didn't.

"Our biggest mistake was when we had the corner and on the counter attack they go on and score. I thought we could have dealt better with that.

"Only once they tried that and it worked; from there we had to stop it. We aren't feeling good; we can't feel good. We wanted to proceed in the tournament but unfortunately we couldn't.

"Players tried their utmost best to put an effort and we couldn't get anything."

The former Maritzburg United tactician adds that their performance was much better than their opening defeat to Bidvest Wits, but felt Shuaib Walters was what seperated the two sides on the night.

"I think this [game] was even better than Wits. The Wits one we can't even talk about, that was absolute nonsense," he added.

"Today they tried their best, got to the box and a couple of times we tried knocking on the keeper.

"Shuaib Walters – man of the match and that could probably be sending a message. There was a glancing header and a shot from Jabu [Manqele].

"We tried to get behind him and he could have been the difference between us losing and winning."

Komphela will be hoping to utilise their two-week international break to try and tweak his squad as best he can before they face Platinum Stars on September 14.
