Mosimane has enjoyed a trophy-laden five-and-a-half years at Sundowns, collecting three Absa Premiership crowns, the Telkom Knockout, the Nedbank Cup, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup, thus missing only the MTN8.
While the prospect of boasting winners' medals to all domestic competitions is an intriguing one, ‘Jingles’ has conceded that the MTN8 may have to remain a pipe dream, given the timing of the competition and his side’s crammed schedule.
“For example, we lost to Maritzburg United [last year] and Fadlu Davids said they had a full-on six weeks [of pre-season]; we were on seven days back from holidays.
“But, imagine if I focused on winning the MTN8 and I brought the players back early from their break, then what could have happened now? We would get nothing.
“You don’t even have a guarantee that you’ll win the top eight, so it’s a very difficult tournament for us.”
Mosimane added that their focus around the time of the MTN8 is on making the necessary signings for the long season ahead, while their attention is also split between domestic and continental fixtures, thus labelling it a “pre-season” tournament.
“It’s a pre-season tournament guys, we are not ready. And we sign players, we are in between Champions League, so it’s always difficult for us. We are never really fit. You’ll see again this year, eish … top eight, man, it’s a difficult one for us!”
