'I hope Steve Komphela wins MTN8 Final' says Mandla Ncikazi

Komphela has taken Amakhosi to the MTN8 Final against Ajax Cape Town already after joining them in July from Maritzburg, penning a three-year deal at Naturena.

Ncikazi says he is delighted to see Komphela hit the ground running at Chiefs in just a short space of time.

“I’m very excited for him and excited for the club and I believe he has massive passion as a coach,” Ncikazi tells snl24.com/kickoff.

“He's new at the club and new philosophy, and for him in his first three or four matches to get to the Final, I'm very excited for him. I believe he's a very great coach, though he has changed the philosophy of playing which is kind of rattled a wee bit, but I think from my side he is on the right track.”

Komphela got the better of his former assistant in the first match of the quarter-final after Chiefs were rattled in the first half as Maritzburg took a 2-0 lead, but Amakhosi stormed back to win the match by an astounding score of 5-3 after extra time.

Ncikazi says his friend was lucky to win that game as his side should have sewn it up as a contest.

“He was lucky and you also need luck in football because he's scored an offside goal, which was the third one,” he reflects.

“But those are the dynamics of football but as to where he is now, I'm really happy for him. I wish he can play and win the Final. I had a lucky charm to win it in 2009 [when I was an assistant coach of Golden Arrows], but when you sit back and look at the dynamics, you also see that 'you know what I know, the team is not doing well, but I know why'."

Komphela will hope to lay down a marker by winning his first cup, with the date of the clash set for the 19 September.

Meanwhile, Ethekwini Government has confirmed that they are keen to host the MTN8 Final again after today being confirmed as the host city for 2022 Commonwealth Games.
