Gavin Hunt happy with his 'new' Bidvest Wits team

The former Chippa United midfielder showed good strength to win the ball but was blown up by the referee, and then backheeled the ball away and was shown a second yellow card for dissent.

Hunt said the incident, in the 93rd minute of the match, left a sour taste in his mouth despite a fantastic result.

“I thought we were good again, we worked hard, we showed what we were made of to come back from the penalty against us so we worled hard … Pirates are a quality side,” Hunt told SuperSport.

“It just leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth [Xola Mlambo’s sending-off] at the end, I mean he won the ball fair and square. We had Ian McLeod come see us last two weeks, all the teams, and I said one thing about the PSL, they don’t reward strength when a player is physical, and he won the ball, okay he kicked the ball away, it’s a red card [for a second yellow] but it didn’t warrant a foul so that leaves a bad taste.

“But it can take away from the effort and determination to come back from a goal down. We were good value.

“We created a lot of pressure around their box but our final ball let us down a little bit tonight. We’re a new team trying to go places, a lot of new players, some players playing out of position, so at the end of the day you’ve got to say it was a great result and we move forward.”

Pirates coach Mushin Ertugral also had something to say about the officiating.

“They got the red card in the end but there were a couple of really dirty fouls right at the beginning,” he said.

“Players need to be protected. First half there was one foul on Mpho Makola from the same player who got sent off [Mlambo], the whole time he was going for him. These elements need to be a little bit better seen.

“But nevertheless we lost and congratulations to Wits, we could’t handle the long balls.”
