Bidvest Wits' Thulani Hlatshwayo delighted with double Soweto wins

After their season-opening League victory over Kaizer Chiefs, the Clever Boys defeated fellow Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates by the very same 2-1 scoreline in their MTN8 quarter-final showdown on Saturday evening, capping off a successful first week of the 2016/17 campaign.

“Obviously it’s a boost, but we still have to play Pirates again in the League, so we mustn’t underestimate everyone else and think, ‘We are there and we can challenge’,” Hlatshwayo told reporters after the game.

“There are other teams we still have to play, so we just need to keep on working and doing what we doing.

“You only as good as your last game, and we managed to do against Pirates what we did against Chiefs and get the result.”

Despite being so early in the campaign, Hlatshwayo says he has already seen improvements in his team compared to last season.

“We want to take each game as it comes, and when we get the opportunities, use them, unlike last season when we created a number of chances but didn’t use them,” he said. “But it seems like this season we’re using the chances we are getting.”

When asked what he felt Wits could achieve this season, ‘Tyson’ was quietly optimistic.

“The mission is to take each game as it comes, obviously to start off well with the MTN8, with history showing that if you do well in the MTN8, you stand a chance in the League,” he said.

After the upcoming Fifa break, Wits travel to Polokwane City for their next encounter on Tuesday, 13 September.
