Veteran midfielder Oupa Manyisa continues to impress

From becoming one of the most renowned names in domestic football over the last decade at clubs such as Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United.

Manyisa is continuing to impress in age-defying performances for GladAfrica Championship outfit Platinum City Rovers.

"As a coach, I'd say Oupa right now is very important to the team and we definitely need and appreciate his experience in terms of game management and keeping the team together," Rovers coach Aschwin Sutton said.

"If you look at our team, we only have four senior players in a squad of 37 players. Those senior players are Oupa, Olaleng Shaku, Thabiso Nkoana and Sikhumbuzo Nkumane.

"These are the players that I'm leaning on in terms to make sure that tactically our structure on the field is maintained and to help us with the training intensity.

"When we have a lot of players at training you need your senior players to take some role so in the defence Shaku will take a bit of weight off me in terms of organising defenders and then in the midfield it will be Oupa while upfront it will be Nkoana. The three of them are leaders.

"I must say I have been impressed with how professional Oupa is in his approach. He respects the game and that is all a coach needs. A player that respects the game and honours the game.

"I engage a lot with him because he is a senior player who has seen it all, so he is influential in our team which is largely inexperienced. He is a senior player who understands game management, structure and so they help a lot in that regard.

"His experience is irreplaceable, and the plus is that he works hard. He works hard because he knows what is needed in this game," says Sutton.

Manyisa spent part of last season with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (now Marumo Gallants) but then left without playing and joined Chippa United.

He remains one of only few players to ever play over 50 games in a single season – a mark he achieved at Pirates.
