Reward for ‘MacGyver’ at Downs

Mamelodi Sundowns have planted rewards for their left-back Divine ‘MacGyver’ Lunga ahead of the club’s return for the new season.

His performance against Ulsan had him selected into the team of the week for the first round of group matches.

Having now entered the last year of his contract at the club, Lunga is in line to be handed an extension at the club.

The Bulawayo born defender is in the optional year of his contract exercised by the club prior to their departure for the Club World Cup.

Lunga initially joined Sundowns from Golden Arrows ahead of the 2021/22 season on a two-year deal with an option of a further year.

However, after playing only a dozen games in his first season at Chloorkop, he then returned to Arrows on loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

Then when he returned, the Zimbabwe international agreed to another deal two-year deal with an option of a further year, which he is now sitting on.

Beyond this optional year running until the end of June 2026, there are already plans to tie Lunga to a new deal amid speculation that there were clubs asking about him after the Club World Cup.

The 30-year-old was prominent in the CAF Champions League this season, playing 10 of the 13 matches in that competition.

Lunga now plays as a non-foreigner having attained South African permanent residence.
