Castillo’s name swinging amid Chiefs exit

Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo is under discussion for a possible move to North Africa after the premature end of his time at Kaizer Chiefs.

Castillo did a decent midfield shift in the two years that he spent at Chiefs, though injury restricted his influence last season.

The 31-year-old fractured his fibula in October last year during a league match against SuperSport United and after his return in March only played 64 minutes spread over four appearances.

Despite all of this, he still got a late call-up to the Venezuela national team in June.

Unfortunate for him was that at Chiefs, he was suddenly not what Nasreddine Nabi desired for his second season in charge.

The Tunisian-Belgian gaffer felt Castillo wasn’t the kind of midfielder that he needed in setting up his team, forcing the club to enter termination negotiations.

Strangely, the termination talks came just a few months after the club had agreed to extend.

Castillo’s exit will open a foreign space and comes after the signing of other midfield options Siphesihle Ndlovu and Ethan Chislett.

It has now been established that Castillo’s name is being rubbed on Egyptian clubs, who include Zamalek.

He has previously been linked with Zamalek, but the scene is different now with the club under a new coach, Yannick Ferreira.

There is also mention of opportunities in Tunisia and Morocco.

This where the 31-year-old will either remain on the same package he was on at the Soweto giants or get an improvement.

There is a standing option of returning to Venezuela, but that will come with a cut in his earnings.
