Masandawana putting champagne on hold

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has urged his charges to put the champagne on hold for now and wait until their last match to start celebrating their success in the league this season.

Sundowns are on course to win their eighth league title in succession, with only three games left before the end of their Betway Premiership campaign.

They now need only four points to be guaranteed the league trophy, the identity of which is yet to be made known publicly.

The Tshwane giants are set to host Stellenbosch FC in their next fixture at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, before traveling to East London to face Chippa United the Wednesday after that, May 14.

Cardoso has ruled out chances of complacency creeping in, saying his team remains focused on finishing the season in style.

“We have Stellies that are always a difficult team to play against, and again, we have to play Chippa United. We have heard news that the match will be played not in a big stadium but in another stadium, and we still have to play against Magesi,” said Cardoso.

“We know our direct opponents will be playing matches until the end of the month. It allows them to play matches after we finish ours, and I don’t think it's good in terms of sports. It should not happen like that, everything should finish at the same time.”

"We need to focus on the next match, like the previous one, fight to win, collect three points if possible, and check what happens because we know our opponents will not play over the weekend. After all, they have the Nedbank Cup final and we have to play again on Wednesday.

"Ja, big respect for the competition, we have to be at our best in order to collect as many points as possible. We're not thinking about celebration but one game at a time,” he added.
