Story Behind Nickname: Shakes

In this edition of Story Behind Nickname former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wits University FC midfielder Manqoba Ngwenya reveals for the first time how he got the nickname "Shakes".

According to Ngwenya the name came following his unusual way of passing the ball to a teammate while looking the other way.

"I remember we were trialists at Wits, and we didn't know each other's names," Ngwenya tells KickOff.

"So, while I was passing the ball looking the other side...that's where the name came from.

"Every time I passed the ball everyone would shout Shakes.

"So, I guess it came from the late Shakes Kungwane.

"To be able to pass the ball without looking it's a skill I mastered from an early age.

"It's all about confusing the defenders.

"Growing up, I always had a ball in my feet practising ball control, passes, trapping, it's something I used to do alone.

"The name became more popular and stuck with me when I started playing with the likes of Benson Mhlongo and Josta Dladla at Wits.

"I didn't mind sharing the name with the late Isaac Kungwane because he was one of my idols.

"No one could pass the ball like him; I was the closest.

"Then there were others like Roger Feutmba who is celebrating his Birthday today, he also did it very well."
