Mamelodi Sundowns eyeing Carling Black Label Cup success

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is eyeing Carling Black Label Cup success as the Brazilians prepare to face AmaZulu in the exhibition tournament on Saturday.

Sundowns were eliminated in the semi-final of the MTN8 by Orlando Pirates, who went on to clinch the trophy.

The Brazilians have since turned their attention to the upcoming Carling Black Label Cup.

"We can't wait for the FIFA break," Mokwena told the club's official site.

"But now we need to drink lots of fluids, rest a little bit, go back home, and prepare for the Carling Black Label Cup because the competition is an opportunity for the team to win. This is what we need to focus on before we think about going home."

Despite missing more than five first team players to injuries, including striker Peter Shalulile, the Brazilians wrapped up their their pre-world cup league fixtures with two emphatic wins on the bounce.

The first was a 5-0 hammering of Maritzburg United, before a 3-0 sweeping of Royal AM just four days later.

The two wins place Sundowns in a comfortable 5-point lead at the top of the DStv Premiership table ahead of the FIFA break. The Brazilians are also the only side on the table boasting a 100% win record from their last seven games.

Mokwena was full of praise for his squad.

"This game belongs to football players and the game is about the football players. I would like to give an Incredible salute and appreciation to the incredible group of footballers at Mamelodi Sundowns," added Mokwena.

"Teamwork has led us to be consistent in the league. No one is bigger than this football club, we're just trying to serve it. When you are servants you forget a lot about yourself and the results."

Sundowns will take on AmaZulu in the first match of the Carling Black Label Cup and should they win, they will meet either Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs in the final.

The first match of the day is scheduled for 9:30, before the Soweto Derby at 15:00. A 3rd-place penalty shootout will follow at 15:30 before the final match at 17:30.
