Downs success spreads to 10 countries

The festivities of Mamelodi Sundowns' latest league title have continued with a cosmopolitan touch sweeping into households in nearby Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to as far as Pudahuel, Chile.

Sundowns have to put to bed their seventh consecutive title, doing so with a record-breaking 73 points amassed from an unbeaten run that only came to an end on the last day.

As the families of the players joined on the field on Saturday, there were players representing 10 nations besides South Africa.

From across the Limpopo River, it was Divine Lunga representing Zimbabwe on the day of his 29th birthday.

It was his second DStv Premiership league.

Across the southwestern border, there is Namibia, from where comes Peter Shalulile – the Sundowns gunslinger.

Up the continent in East Africa, there is the duo of Denis Onyango (Uganda) and Kenya's Brian Onyango, whose country shares a border with Ethiopia, who have Abubeker Nasir at Sundowns.

Right at the top of the continent is Morocco – home to Abdelmounaim Boutouil.

Latin America has a huge footprint as well with Junior Mendieta and Matias Esquivel from Argentina.

The duo won their first league titles at Sundowns, and from their neighbouring country of Brazil is Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

Costa was also in his debut season, while Gaston Sirino – who comes from Uruguay, one of 10 countries that share a border with Brazil – has amazingly been a league winner for all his time at Sundowns, where he has won seven in a row since arriving from Bolivia.

From Chile, comes Marcelo Allende, who has won the hearts of the Yellow Nation.

Allende hails from Pudahuel, a Santiago commune.

Through the glory of the last seven years, Sundowns have had players from Zambia, Bolivia, Slovakia, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Venezuela, New Zealand, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Algeria and Colombia.
