Zwane reveals reasons for rejuvenated striker's early-season struggles

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has detailed the factors that contributed towards Ashely Du Preez's initial struggles at Naturena as the rapid attacker regained his electric form.

A rejuvenated Du Preez provided two assists as Amakhosi recorded a hard-fought 3-2 win over Maritzburg United on Saturday night at Harry Gwala Stadium.

The 25-year-old also scored the winner as Chiefs sent Casric Stars crashing out of the Nedbank Cup just a week prior.

Zwane said he is not surprised by the strikers' renaissance and has given some insight into the challenges that contributed to Du Preez's struggles.

"Yes, we've already believed in Ash [Ashley Du Preez], a top player, top striker. Very explosive, and team player as well," Zwane said.

"Unfortunately for him, his progress was hampered by injuries. Whenever he came back we thought he had regained his form them some niggling injuries would take him out for some time.

"He's one of the players that has been unfortunate with injuries but I'm happy now that he's doing well for himself. He's managed to play 90 minutes.

"The turning point for Ash was when he played in the very same field against Maritzburg when he played 120 minutes. I was happy to see him doing that and I said no, as long as we can be able to keep him on the field for the next 90 minutes, anything can happen in our favour at any given time."

Chiefs will only return to action on 1 April in a DStv Premiership clash against Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium.
