Best and worst of coaches at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs management will go through having to feel the weight of having to make coaching-related decisions for the fifth consecutive season, with Ernst Middendorp still the best appointment they have made in the last decade.

Johnson has completed his caretaker reign with an appalling line of results that have sunk Chiefs to a tenth-place finish.

So bad has Johnson been at Chiefs that he won only six out of 22 matches.

A return of two wins in the last 16 games is poor at any club and the fact that it happened at a club of Chiefs' stature makes it abysmal.

As Chiefs line up another coach, it is worth noting that for all the decisions that they have made, Middendorp has been the best.

The German gaffer took Amakhosi to within minutes of lifting the league title in the 2019/20 season.

Chiefs finished second, but Middendorp was then sacked.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 25: Head Coach, Erns

For all the coaches that have been at Naturena since the last trophy success in 2015, Middendorp is well ahead of the rest based on the important column of winning games.

The vastly experienced coach recorded a 48,3% mark after taking over from the chaos that was left by Giovanni Solinas.

Arthur Zwane might have been a trial appointment based on the fact he had no previous head coach experience but was second-best, delivering a 43,2 winning percentage.

Steve Komphela lasted the longest and came within a month of completing three years, walking away with 41%.

Stuart Baxter had a 40,7% winning mark in his second spell, Solinas 35% and Molefi Ntseki 30,8%.

Joint-bottom is the pair of Gavin Hunt (27,27%) and Johnson (27,27%).

Hunt won 12 out of 44 matches during the season in which Chiefs were banned from signing players but still reached the final of the CAF Champions League.

Johnson has now had six victories from 22 and whoever takes over will find a squad thin on confidence.
