Chiefs choose different direction over striker?

Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have taken a different direction in their hunt for a striker, which will likely lead to the exit of one of the Soweto giants' hitmen.

Amakhosi are expected to cast the net beyond South African shores in their hunt for a striker ahead of a new season and are believed to have made a decision on the future of Ranga Chivaviro.

The move may come as a surprise to some, as head coach Nasreddine Nabi was a professed admirer of the striker, even going as far as trying to sign him on two occasions while at Young Africans.

At the time, Chivavairo was proving to be one of the deadliest marksmen on the continent, spearheading Marumo Gallants to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup with 17 goals across all competitions.

However, things have not turned out well at Naturena.

He joined at the start of 2023/24 on a two-year deal with the option to extend, and scored just four times from 23 appearances.

His second season, this time under Nabi, promised much but delivered little as well: he netted five times in 22 appearances.

For context on the severity of the situation, January signing Glody Lilepo has scored six goals in 13 appearances, and 20-year-old Wandile Duba - haunted by injuries - has scored six as well.

The prevailing conclusion marks the end of Chivavairo's time at Chiefs, as the club's hierarchy has opted against extension, according to insiders.

Amakhosi are determined to sign a goal-scoring striker in the upcoming window, and at the top of that list remains Pyramids FC's Fiston Mayele, who scored twice to eliminate Orlando Pirates from the CAF Champions League at the semi-finals stage.

The Egyptian side, though, will not part easily with their talisman, who is also believed to be on a high salary that the Soweto giants would have to dig deep to match.

Meanwhile, Chivaviro will not be the only exit at the Village. The futures of Happy Mashiane, Edson Castillo, George Matlou and Zitha Kwinika remain in doubt.
