Chiefs end Netherlands tour with defeat

Kaizer Chiefs ended their pre-season tour of the Netherlands with a 2-1 loss to FC Twente on Wednesday evening.

After netting the winner against PEC Zwolle, young Naledi Hlongwane got a start alongside recalls for Mfundo Vilakazi, Zitha Kwinika, Dillon Solomons.

Chiefs struggled earlier on and had to pick the ball out of the net as Bas Kuipers pounced from close-range, but it was called back for offside.

Kuipers continued causing problems andpenetrated persistently through the lines of the Amakhosi, but couldn’t get a breakthrough in on goal.

Twente should’ve gone ahead midway in the opening half from a looping header following a corner-kick, but goalkeeper Brandon Petersen produced a solid save.

Chiefs succumbed to the pressure three minutes to halftime when Daan Rots raced into the area to meet a pin-point cross and headed in from close-range.

Amakhosi made three changes before the second half as Bruce Bvuma, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Pule Mmodi, Thabiso Monyane, Tashreeq Morris, and Glodly Lilepo entered the field.

Twente looked to have doubled the lead through a finish on the rebound from Damian Van Bruggen, but it was disallowed for offside.

Chiefs continued on the back-foot and conceded more chances minutes in the resumption as Sayfallah Ltaief pulled inches wide of the far corner from a reverse pass.

However, the Amakhosi remained composed and levelled inside the last 20 minutes through a penalty from Inacio Miguel after Mmodi was brought down in the area.

Twente regained in the lead with under five minutes to go when Ltaief sneaked in at the far post of the area and finished off a low cross.

Chiefs were unable to stage a comeback and concluded their final pre-season tour of the Netherlands with a narrow defeat.
