'We beat Pyramids with nothing at Marumo Gallants'

After Mamelodi Sundowns' CAF Champions League final defeat to Pyramids FC, the former coach of a PSL club has predicted what that could mean for South African football going forward.

Sundowns appeared to have found a favourable team to beat in the Champions League final having narrowly overcome defending champions Al Ahly in the semi-finals.

However, they were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg against a  side that had shocked Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals, progressing 3-2 on aggregate.

The Brazilians needed a performance of their lives in the final second leg away in Cairo on Sunday but actually went 2-0 down by the early stages of the second half.

Iqraam Rayners gave them hope after pulling a goal back with 15 minutes to go, but it was too little, too late, as the home side were crowned champions for the first time.

Dylan Kerr was in charge when Marumo Gallants beat Pyramids in the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals two seasons ago, and has now offered his reaction, speaking to KickOff.com.

"We beat Pyramids. Marumo Gallants beat Pyramids home, and away (we drew). Sundowns drew at home and lost away. Marumo Gallants had nothing (compared to Sundowns' quality)," remarked Kerr.

"Pyramids probably have the most money in Egypt per owner, but they've got no supporters. They literally have got no supporters at their games. They don't have a fanbase, there's no fans that support them, but the owner is very rich.

"Compared to Al Ahly and Zamalek, they don't come close. They're like SuperSport United and AmaZulu, who play at Moses Mabhida and look to get 1 000 or 2 000 fans watching. They actually don't even have that many."

After Sundowns won the league for the eighth consecutive season, the former Leeds United man suggested that perhaps their loss to a less fancied Pyramids in a continental final could signal the beginning of the end of their domestic dominance.

"I think he (Miguel Cardoso) is gonna be judged on this result. Going forward, I don't know what the Sporting Director (Flemming Berg) is gonna do. Sundowns have won eight league titles in a row, somebody's gonna challenge them now."
