Matsau jumps on Nabi bandwagon

Another former Kaizer Chiefs player has joined the ranks of those advocating for the club to give current head coach Nasreddine Nabi more time to lead the team back to its glory days.

Once again, Amakhosi failed to secure a top-eight finish, ending up in ninth place on the Betway Premiership log table.

The team's inability to defeat Polokwane City FC, resulting in a 0-0 draw on Saturday, means that the Soweto giants will be watching the MTN8 Cup from the couch next season.

According to Daniel "Massaro" Matsau, Nabi's achievements this season should not be overlooked. By winning the 2024/2025 Nedbank Cup final, he ended the club's 10-year trophy drought.

"Kaizer Chiefs are in a difficult situation at the moment, but let’s hope they can bring in good players next season to enhance the team," Matsau tells KickOff.

"Not qualifying for the top eight is disappointing for those of us who love the club. We understand it's challenging for the club to acquire the players the coach needs, but we hope that will change next season.

"This season, some of the players lacked hunger; only a few demonstrated their desire when our best players were sidelined due to injuries.

"Some supporters often respond harshly to us former players when we discuss the team, thinking we are being too critical. However, we must be realistic: if a team is not performing well, it is not performing well. Conversely, if a team is doing well, they are doing well.

"We were all hopeful for qualification, but the reality is that they faced tremendous challenges, which is why we find ourselves in this situation.

"It was disappointing to see Chiefs not qualify for the top eight. I hope the management grants the coach more time, although I know it won’t be easy to secure all the players he desires.

"Kaizer Chiefs have struggled to attract the players they want for too many years now. It’s better for a coach to fail with the players he personally recommended than to continue with an unsettled lineup. He has been trying to find a stable starting eleven by giving every player on the roster a chance."
