CAF hand Chicken Inn R75 000 fine

CAF said the fine was for “offensive behaviour of players towards the referee” but gave no other details.

Sundowns beat Chicken Inn 2-1 on aggregate but only after being awarded a last-gasp penalty. A 95th-minute Katlego Mashego spot-kick sent Sundowns through after a 2-0 win at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

CAF this weekend handed out a bevy of fines for unruly behaviour of both teams and spectators in recent African Nations Cup qualifiers and African club competitions.

Bafana Bafana’s upcoming Nations Cup opponents Gambia were also fined US$5 000 because fans threw missiles onto the pitch during their last qualifier at home in March when they drew with Mauritania in Group M.

Egypt were fined the same amount for excess use of lasers by fans trying to shine a sharp green light into the eyes of players during the Nations Cup qualifier against Nigeria in Alexandria.

The biggest fine was US$10 000 for Kenya after rioting spectators halted their March qualifier in Nairobi against Guinea Bissau and police had to use tear gas to disperse an angry crowd.

Surprisingly, Kenya received – besides the fine – only a warning regarding security at matches under the auspices of CAF and told that if similar incidents occur again, they might be forced to host matches at a neutral venue.
