Kamohelo Mokotjo opens up on Bafana Bafana's AFCON target

Bafana Bafana midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo says this is a new generation headed to the Africa Cup of Nations and has opened up on their target at the tournament.

Bafana's provisional AFCON squad are currently in preparations for the showpiece in Egypt, which kicks off in just over two weeks' time.

A group of 27 players are battling it out for 23 spots in the final squad due to be submitted to CAF by June 12, while coach Stuart Baxter has also got his eye on some of the juniors participating in the COSAFA Cup in Durban.

But, regardless of who makes the cut, for many this will be a first major continental tournament, including Mokotjo, who believes their 'underdog' tag could come to their advantage in a group alongside powerhouses Ivory Coast, Morocco and Namibia.

"Most of us are going to the AFCON for the first time. It's a new generation and, for some of us, it might be our last time," said Mokotjo.

"But we focus on the here and now, and the goal is to go there, perform and end as far as possible in the tournament and nothing else.

"If we're undermined, that well probably be to our advantage because we know how well we can play if we do what's required."

With pressure mounting, given the lacklustre showing of the South African cricket team at the World Cup, Bafana's COSAFA Cup defeat to Botswana last Friday and Banyana Banyana's thrashing at the hands of Norway, the Brentford star insists they're more positive about their own fortunes.

"We're only focussing on ourselves. Of course, the positives and negatives from the other national teams affect us as well," he defended.

"But going to the AFCON, we're positive that we can pass the group stages, and after that we'll see how far we can end."
