The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations wiil go down as the worst as hosts for Egypt, after they were knocked out by Bafana Bafana at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday night.
Egypt, who have since parted ways with coach Javier Aguirre after the 1-0 defeat to Bafana in the last-16, have hosts the competition on five occasions and this was the first time they did not finish in the top four.
On three occasions Egypt have won the competitions as hosts, while in 1974 they finished third on home soil. The generation of 2019, led by star play Mo Salah, were not knocked out in the last-16 by Stuart Baxter's Bafana side, a result which left the country in shock and tears.
Following their last-16 defeat, the Egyptian FA president Abo Rida has resigned, coach Aguirre and his technical team have been shown the exit door.
After resigning as president, Abo Rida called on the members of the federation's board to also resign following the nation's embarassing showing.
Although the federation is not limited to just the senior national team, Rida thought it was best for him to step down as president as a commitment.
It was Thembinkosi Lorch's goal in the final 10 minutes of the game which knocked Egypt out of their own party and left the supporters shocked and in tears.
Bafana, meanwhile, will now play old foes Nigeria in the quarterfinals, hoping to defy the odds yet again.
