Torres first burst on to the scene with hometown club Atletico Madrid, signing his first professional contract as a 15-year-old in 1999. He made his first team debut in May 2001, and by the time he was 19, he was captain of the Rojiblancos.
In July 2007, he made the move to England to join Liverpool, who were managed by Rafael Benitez at the time. He scored 24 Premier League goals in his first season with the Reds, and banged in 81 league goals by the time he left the club to join Chelsea in January 2011.
With the Blues, Torres won the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League. The 35-year-old had a loan spell with Serie A giants AC Milan before returning to Atletico in 2016. He won his first major title with the Spanish giants when they lifted the Europa League in 2018, before joining Sagan Tosu in July that year.
On Friday morning, Torres tweeted: "I have something very important to announce. After 18 exciting years, the time has come to put an end to my football career."
He was part of Spain's most successful generation that won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012, and made 110 appearances altogether for La Furia Roja, scoring 38 times.
