‘A muti man was earning more than players and coaches’

In this edition of My Muti Story, KickOff speaks with former Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Humphrey Mlwane.

Mlwane, who previously served as head coach both in the professional and amateur ranks, remains deeply involved in football.

He holds a CAF A License in coaching, and his current team, The Bees FC, are the reigning ABC Motsepe League champions in Mpumalanga.

Since transitioning from player to coach, Mlwane has worked with approximately ten clubs during his coaching career.

"I have coached both in the ABC Motsepe League and abroad," Mlwane tells KickOff.

"There is so much I have observed from my early days in coaching. I've seen head coaches earning a monthly salary of just R7,000.

"[Laughs] There are teams out there that don’t even aspire to manage their operations professionally.

"I once coached a team where salaries were a serious joke. The only thing the owner of the club believed in was muti—nothing else," he added.

"Imagine being a footballer and relying on R3000 as your sole source of income, while your coach is earning only R7,000 a month. How much do you think the players are going to earn if their coach is making that much?

"At that club, a muti man was earning far more than us the players and coaches, he was paid R20,000 a month. [Laughs] That’s when I truly realized that this football thing is not for the faint-hearted."
