2019 Golden Boy: Three Africans make shortlist for prestigious European-based award

Three Africans are in the running for the 2019 Golden Boy award, alongside wonderkids Matthijs De Ligt, Joao Félix and Jadon Sancho.

A total of 40 wonderkids based in Europe have been selected by a panel of journalists across the continent for the prize currently held by the Juventus defender, de Ligt.

The publications that are involved in the voting are are: Bild (Germany), Blick (Switzerland), A Bola (Portugal), l'Équipe (France), France Football (France), Marca (Spain), Mundo Deportivo (Spain), Ta Nea (Greece), Sport Express (Russia), De Telegraaf (Netherlands) and The Times (United Kingdom).

To be eligible for the award, the player must be under the age of 21 and while the likes of Kylian Mbappe falls within the category, his omission last year was down to the player 'outgrowing' the award.

However, among some of the finest talents football has to offer the Africans that have made the list are Senegal ace Krepin Diatta, currently at Belgian First League A side Club Brugge.

Nigeria duo Samuel Chukwueze and Tom Dele-Bashiru from Villarreal and Watford respectively make up the three players, while Phil Foden, Mattéo Guendouzi, Moise Kean, Mason Mount and Reiss Nelson are the representitives of the Premier League. 

Some of the previous winners include Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Raheem Sterling and Kylian Mbappe.
