2018 World Cup match report Mexico v Sweden 27 June 2018

Sweden piled on the pressure from the word go and nearly grabbed an early lead with their physicality and superior height to out-muscle the Mexicans.

El Tri were struggling to get into their passing rhythm in the first quarter of an hour although Carlos Vela nearly opened the scoring in the 16th minute with one clear chance, but he fired wide after going through.

The Scandinavians went close to breaking the deadlock on 30 minutes from a corner but El Tri goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa tipped Marcus Berg’s strike over the bar.

There was no way through for Juan Carlos Osorio’s charges with five minutes of the first stanza remaining as the Swedes kept a good shape at the back.

Ludwig Augustinsson finally got the breakthrough for Sweden five minutes into the second stanza with a half-volley at the back post, 0-1.

The Swedes had the momentum and were awarded a penalty on the hour-mark for a challenge on Berg, which skipper Andreas Granqvist step up and convert the spot-kick to double the lead.

El Tri were struggling to deal with set-pieces from the Scandinavians as Edson Alvarez netted an own goal in the 73rd minute to hand Sweden a third goal.

It was comfortable for Janne Andersson’s troops in the closing stages of the encounter, as their fate had already been sealed regardless of Germany's result.

In the end, Mexico could not get on the scoresheet to add to their goal tally, with the game finish 3-0 although they did finish after Germany had lost 2-0 to Korea Republic.
