Ex-PSL coach warns Riveiro after move to Al Ahly

A coach who has held the fort at several clubs in the PSL has revealed why Jose Riveiro's move from Orlando Pirates to Al Ahly is a big step made too soon.

Riveiro surprisingly jumped the Sea Robbers ship before his three-year contract could conclude, hurriedly leaving for Egypt, with a few games of the Betway Premiership left.

There was already speculation on whether he would extend his stay beyond 2024/25, after winning five trophies at the club.

A coach who has worked at the PSL for nearly a decade has cast doubt over the Spaniard lasting long at Al Ahly.

"I find it a strange move. I think he should have stayed at Pirates for one more season to try and win the league. No disrespect to the MTN8, but it's not really a big competition," the coach told KickOff.com.

"Pirates hail Riveiro as a miracle worker. Winning the MTN8 and Nedbank Cups is nothing really to shout about.

"Now he's at Al Ahly. Look at Pitso (Mosimane) - one, two good seasons and he left. Rulani (Mokwena) could not finish a season (at Wydad Casablanca). Riveiro, I can guess what's gonna happen in three months' time.

"PSL is a different league compared to the Egyptian league, different mentality. Players are more physical, they've got more strength, power.

"Pitso won the league with a few games to go. After that, in his third season he struggled. Rulani struggled (at Wydad). Riveiro, is he gonna be another coach from the PSL to go there (in North Africa) and continue the trend? I hope not."

The ex-PSL coach, who has also managed on the continent, suggested that Riveiro staying at least one season at Bucs to end Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance was going to make his profile even bigger because the coaching market in North Africa is not stable.

"The Nedbank Cup perhaps is big because it's like the FA Cup, but the league is what you want. Maybe it's about money... I don't know. But, for me, he should have stayed one more season to try and knock Sundowns off that pedestal.

"Look at Rulani, where is he gonna go now? It's a big step up (for Riveiro). He took his staff (from South Africa) and now they're all out of work. There (in North Africa), you've got to nail your first season or else you're gone," concluded the coach.
