Chiefs' Vilakazi penalty reviewed

Renowned former FIFA referee Victor Hlungwani has set the record straight on a controversial call that possibly denied Kaizer Chiefs a win in their goalless draw against Polokwane City and a spot in the top eight.

The Soweto giants put in an underwhelming performance to end the season with a 0-0 draw against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium.

As a consequence of the result, the Chiefs miss out on the top eight for a second consecutive season and finish ninth on the Betway Premiership log table.

Despite leaving it late, Chiefs came alive late in the match and put pressure on the opposition. They were very nearly reviewed when Mfundo Vilakazi drifted inside from the left wing and was seemingly stomped from behind by City's Surprise Manthosi

The match official on the day, Moreki Lekwape waved play on.

Reviewing the match on SoccerZone, Hlungwani has revealed that Chiefs should have indeed been awarded a penalty for the foul on Vilakazi.

"We see Mfundo Vilakazi entering the box, Manthosi is behind," Hlungwani said.

"Let's see if it was fair or unfair contact. So he is behind, and there is contact there on the line, and the line belongs to the area in which there are boundaries. There is a second touch there with a push, with the leg and with a knee that causes Vilakazi to fall.

"So here an offence has been committed inside the penalty area, of which a penalty should have been awarded for stepping on the leg and also using the knee to push. Vilakzi

"So here, incorrect decision, a penalty should have been awarded to Mfundo Vilakazi."

The result will come as little comfort to the Amakhosi faithful who will not see their side in next season's MTN8 cup competition.
