According to reports in Italy, Juve are preparing to offer forward Federico Bernardeschi to United as part of a deal to land Smalling, who enjoyed a stellar 2019/20 campaign on loan with Serie A rivals AS Roma.
That is according to Calciomercato, who claim that Roma are unable to match the Red Devils' current asking price for the England international and now face competition from the Bianconeri for his long-term signature.
It is reported that Maurizio Sarri's side is hoping to use Bernardeschi as a makeweight to bring down United's valuation of the Greenwich-born defender, who made 37 appearances across all competitions during his time in Rome.
According to Manchester Evening News, Smalling's loan with Roma will not be extended for the remainder of the UEFA Europa League campaign, and the 30-year-old will return to Manchester during the course of the week.
