New Chiefs signing earns national team call-up

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Flávio Silva has earned a national team call-up by Guinea-Bissau for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Silva recently penned a two-year contract with the Soweto giants, a deal that will keep him at the club until June 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year.

The 29-year-old forward joined Amakhosi from Indonesian side Persebaya Surabaya during the off-season and was part of the team’s pre-season tour to the Netherlands.

Although he has yet to make his official debut for the Naturena-based giants, Silva has already caught the attention of national team selectors.

He has been named in Guinea-Bissau’s preliminary squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Djibouti next month.

Bissau will host the Leone Stars on September 4 at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro, followed by a clash with Djibouti on September 8 at the same venue.

Born in Bissau, Silva previously represented Portugal at the U16 and U19 levels but has recently switched his international allegiance to the country of his birth.

This marks his first senior call-up for the West African nation, and he will be hoping to make the final squad as the matches draw near.

Bissau currently sits fifth in Group A of the qualifiers, trailing group leaders Egypt by 10 points with only four matches remaining. This leaves them with a very slim chance of qualifying for the tournament, as only the group winner earns an automatic spot at the World Cup.
