Man Utd start season with unconvincing victory

Manchester United started their Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

New signings Andre Onana and Mason Mount got their official debuts after playing a few games in the pre-season, while Anthony Martial did make the bench as Marcus Rashford started up top.

The Red Devils carved out the game's first chance on 13 minutes when Antony won the ball high up and managed to play in Marcus Rashford, who saw his low strike saved by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Wolves nearly United sleeping at the midway point after Matheus Cunha eliminated two Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez before passing to Pablo Sarabia on the edge of the box, but the Spaniard's shot deflected off Raphael Varane and sailed wide.

The first half continued in that similar fashion as the Red Devils struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances for the remainder of the first half, much to the frustration of the home fans.

The visitors went agonisingly close to taking the lead five minutes after the break when Sarabia broke down the right before picking out Cunha, who sent his first-time strike against the upright.

Ten Hag had seen enough and looked to refresh his attack in the 68th minute, as Jadon Sancho and Christian Eriksen replaced Mount and Alejandro Garnacho for the latter stages.

Wolves' resistance eventually broke with 14 minutes left on the clock as Raphael Varane powered home a close-range header from Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the team's first goal of the season.

The Red Devils did see out the remaining stages to claim the win, but they were fortunate not to have conceded a penalty for Onana's challenge on Sasa Kalajdzic in second-half stoppage time.
