Wasteful Al Ahly drop points in Riveiro's debut

Jose Riveiro's Al Ahly started their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez lined up in the Miami attack but the hosts were without left-back Jordi Alba, while the Egyptian side included new signings Trezeguet and Achraf Dari in their starting line-up.

Trezeguet looked to make an immediate impact as he broke free down the left before playing in Emam Ashour, who saw his strike saved by goalkeeper Oscar Ustari in a one-on-one situation.

Ashour would play no further part in the contest after picking up an apparent shoulder injury and was forced to come off after 13 minutes, with new signing Zizo brought on as his replacement.

While Miami failed to carve out chances, Al Ahly had the ball in the back of the net on 30 minutes through Abou Ali's neat finish but the celebrations were cut short du to the offside flag.

The Egyptians had a big chance to take the lead on 41 minutes after being awarded a penalty for Telasco Segovia' bringing down Zizo in the box, however Trezeguet was unable to profit as his effort was saved by Ustari.

Miami were a lot more threatening in the second period as Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was called upon to keep out Messi's powerful strike from distance, as the Argentine began to have a bigger influence on the encounter.

The Inter captain went close to taking the lead just after the hour mark with a curling free-kick from distance that sailed into the side-netting, with parts of the stadium celebrating as they thought the ball went into the back of the net.

With time running out, El Shenawy ensured Al Ahly left the stadium with a point after producing a good save to keep out Fafà Picault's header while the Egyptian goalkeeper tipped Messi's shot onto the crossbar in stoppage time.
