Mokwana's Esperance fall to Chelsea in CWC

Esperance failed to advance to the FIFA Club World Cup knockout stage after losing 3-0 to Chelsea in their final Group D clash.

South African attacker Elias Mokwana kept his spot in the starting line-up after the team secured their first win over the weekend.

The Bafana Bafana star was played in a more central role this time around although the Tunisian champions found it tough to get the ball off their European counterparts.

The Blues got their reward at the end of the first half as defender Tosin Adarabioyo met a free-kick from Enzo Fernandez and sent a neat header into the far corner.

There was enough time for the Premier League side to get a second goal before the interval when Fernandez turned provider to play in Liam Delap, who skipped past one defender and calmly slotted home.

Mokwana would play no further part of the contest as he made way for Mohamed Derbali at halftime, as the Tunisians looked to re-shuffle the pack.

The second half would prove to be a carbon-copy of the first, as the Blues dominated possession while Esperance struggle fashion any openings at goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen.

Substitute Tyrique George rounded off the scoring in second-half stoppage time with a powerful strike from distance to make it 3-0 and seal Chelsea's spot in the round of 16, while Esperance bow out of the competition.
